What Do We Do?

We offer diagnostic assessments for children and adults with conditions in which the diagnosis is unclear but may be genetic in origin. We offer initial management advice for genetic disorders. When a genetic disorder runs in the family we will discuss all options, including genetic testing, in a non-directive but supportive way.

We also offer pre-conception counselling, carrier testing ante-natal genetic investigations including NIPT (non invasive pre natal testing) and interpretations of the results.

The sorts of problems we can help with include:

  • Learning difficulties – especially if associated with other medical problems
  • Birth defects
  • Chromosomal problems
  • Family history of a possible genetic problem in couples planning a pregnancy or in the early stages of a pregnancy
  • Exposure to a possible teratogen in pregnancy such as alcohol or medications
  • Pre-implantation diagnosis (PGD)
  • Family or personal history of single gene disorders such as Huntington disease, muscular dystrophies, familial ataxia, cystic fibrosis, Marfan syndrome and neurofibromatosis.
  • A strong family history of cancer*
  • Non-paternity issues
  • Medico-legal consultations.
  • Interpretation of genetic results.

* Familial bowel cancer is best referred to the New Zealand Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Service at www.nzfgcs.co.nz

What happens?

We accept both self-referrals and referrals from health professionals by email, fax, post or telephone. It is usually helpful to discuss your concerns with your general practitioner first. We will initially contact you by telephone or e mail to arrange an appointment at a mutually convenient time and location and we will discuss if any further information is required for the appointment. We will send you a family history questionnaire which will help us to draw up a detailed family tree.

The appointment will be with Dr Kidd. A first appointment will usually take about one hour and may involve a physical examination. It will be followed up with a comprehensive letter to you, summarising the consultation and the discussion. We will copy this to your GP and other specialists, but only with your permission. Genetic testing and other investigations can be arranged if necessary.

Waiting times

We aim to keep waiting times as short as possible. Clients with urgent problems are normally be contacted within 24 hours and offered an appointment the same week if they can travel to Christchurch. Other clients are usually seen within two weeks of their referral in Christchurch. Clinics are also held elsewhere in a number of other locations in New Zealand depending on demand.
